Upon Closing My Eyes

Solo exhibition

Walk through the deepest chasms carved by time, and you will find the skin of the giant in the canyon walls, etched in limestone, sandstone, basalt, and granite. It is ever aging and molting on a scale of time unfathomable to your mammalian mind.

Hike the tallest ridges formed by growth plates colliding, and you have touched the bony contours of the giant’s skeleton. Spine, hips, and fingers protrude beneath skins of grasses, mosses, and lichen.

Feel the temperature change from the cool of night to the heat of day, and you have bathed in the breath of the giant—a slow inhale and exhale that only a being over four billion years old can sustain.

Upon Closing My Eyes is a meditation on the animacy of the landscapes we inhabit. This body of work explores the ways we can acknowledge the Earth as a sentient collaborator in both societal advancement and individual growth.  Geology documents the histories and impressions of its countless life cycles. In an exchange of knowledge with the land, I respond by fossilizing my own moments of the physical and emotional human experience into tactile geological representations
